It has been a benign summer in SW Florida this year, except for the Red Tide and Blue-Green Algal blooms that have plagued us. We are now in the last days of our hurricane season and most of Florida have escaped any serious storm impacts, until two weeks ago when the panhandle beach towns suffered a massive blow from hurricane Michael.
Now blue skies, dry air and moderate days herald the imminent arrival of our glorious winter weather. Our first gathering to begin the season is a Welcome Back Reception at the home of Jennifer Mclean on Sanibel Island, Sunday December 9. All Lee County Harvard Alums are invited to join us for this informal social event.
Check out our upcoming events. The Events Committee members have been diligent and creative, scouting out and securing recreational and educational activities for our members and their guests to enjoy this season. The production this year at the Florida Repertory Theater in January is a powerful, prize winning American drama that is sure to stimulate conversation with cast members at our private reception that follows the performance.
Appreciating our mild and sunny winter days, four of our events are outdoor adventures. These include a river cruise, tours of two unique local farms (winter is our growing season) that provide an interesting contrast, and a Red Sox spring training game. All four are on Saturdays. A mid-week morning event is a docent-guided tour of the Baker Museum of fine art, focusing on the current exhibits of the season and concluding with a box lunch in the courtyard, another outdoor appreciation opportunity.
The season finale in early April is our Annual Dinner at the Pelican’s Nest Golf Club in Pelican Landing, Bonita Springs. Our featured guest is club member Richard LeBer MBA ’86, President and CEO of the Harry Chapin Food Bank.
A Harvard Club of Lee County Membership Directory is in preparation. This identifies our members with the contact information provided on the application and approved to be published. It will include all members of the 2017-18 season and new members or tardy renewals of prior members whose application is received by November 30. The Directory will be given to members who attend our Welcome Back Reception in December and mailed to the others later in the month.
Along with the Board of Directors and members of the Events Committee, I look forward to greeting old friends and meeting new ones, at our gathering on Sanibel Island in December to begin the 33rd season of the Harvard Club of Lee County!
